My guiding principles as a Lecturer is my philosophy to learning and teaching, which at its core is my belief system of Christianity and this shapes my approach to life and practice. Being a central driver, my faith has built a deep belief in lifelong learning and the importance of community. For example, daily Bible reading (study and research), individual and corporate prayer (practise) and the regular weekly Sunday gathering at Hillsong church (community) has shown that learning is a deeply personal and challenging process and this awareness allows to build empathy and supporting communities with my students.
This command is supported by Paul expressing its characteristics in action “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…”
(1 Corinthians, 13:4-8, The Holy Bible, New International Version).
Upon reflection, there is a strong sense of culture in my character, which incorporates hospitality and a sense of belonging. Both play a major role in my practice of compassionate pedagogy. Demonstrating kindness in the Fashion studios, by having a care of duty to each individuals learning + teaching to the collective group. Having an inclusive culture builds positive community, through which students forge friendships and trust in healthy studentship experiences.
